Obedience

Obedience to something greater than ourselves is the foundation of any kind of religion, be it Christianity, Buddhism, Commercialism, Judgmentalism, etc.. And yes, even atheism. It’s funny how if the football coach requires practice every day at 6:00 in the morning, everyone’s fine with it; but if catechism class begins at 8:00 instead of 9:00, once a week, people are up in arms.

Faith is an activity, not a passivity: actively submitting to a Truth greater than our understanding of things; actively allowing ourselves to admit that we will never know everything to our satisfaction; actively asking, at some point, where the true joy of our lives is found; and actively protecting that joy from any corruption; including, sometimes, our own emotions.

Submitting to anything subjective is to ultimately bounce along with whatever tide comes our way, be they internal tides or external tides.
